Technology can assist, alert and intervene, but the driver remains in control
Today, almost every new passenger car and light commercial vehicle entering the fleet market is equipped with some form of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). Features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), Blind Spot Monitoring and Driver Attention Monitoring are now commonplace, helping to support safer driving and reduce the likelihood of collisions.
Yet, despite the rapid adoption of ADAS, road traffic incidents continue to occur every day.
The reason is simple: ADAS is designed to assist the driver, not replace them.
Drivers remain responsible for every decision they make behind the wheel, and no amount of technology can replace good observation, anticipation and awareness of potential hazards.
As more vehicles equipped with sophisticated driver assistance technology enter service, the real opportunity lies in ensuring drivers understand what these systems do, how they operate, where their limitations lie and, perhaps most importantly, why they should work with them rather than against them.
Assistance, Not Autonomous Driving
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding ADAS is that modern vehicles are capable of driving themselves.
They are not.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are exactly that, assistance systems. They are designed to warn, support and intervene where appropriate, but responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle always remains with the driver.
Automatic Emergency Braking may reduce the severity of a collision or even prevent one altogether, but it cannot be relied on to predict every situation.
Lane Keeping Assist can help prevent unintended lane departure, but poor road markings, roadworks, severe weather or worn lane markings can affect how the system performs. Likewise, Intelligent Speed Assistance can recognise speed limit signs, but drivers must still remain aware of temporary speed restrictions, roadworks and changing traffic conditions.
Understanding the limitations of ADAS is just as important as understanding its capabilities.

Different Drivers, Different Attitudes
One of the realities facing today’s fleet managers is that drivers have very different attitudes towards ADAS.
Some drivers quickly embrace the technology, appreciating the additional support and reassurance it provides.
Others find frequent warning sounds frustrating, misunderstand why systems intervene or actively switch certain features off because they feel they interfere with their driving style.
Experience also plays a part.
Drivers who learned to drive before ADAS became commonplace often pride themselves on being self-reliant and may view some of these systems as unnecessary. Equally, younger drivers who have only ever driven vehicles equipped with ADAS may become accustomed to relying on technology and could find themselves less confident when driving older vehicles without these features.
This has become an increasing discussion point within the driver training industry.
As new drivers enter the workplace with experience of highly assisted vehicles, fleet managers may need to ensure they are equally capable of safely operating older vehicles that offer little or no electronic driver assistance.
Any technology designed to support drivers also has the potential to create over-reliance. Until every vehicle on the road offers the same level of driver assistance technology, fleet drivers will continue sharing the road with older vehicles, poorly maintained vehicles and drivers with varying levels of experience.
Good driving practices remains the first line of defence.
Driver Familiarisation Makes the Difference
Many organisations invest significant sums in specifying vehicles with the latest safety technology, yet comparatively little time is spent ensuring drivers understand how those systems work.
Introducing a new vehicle into the fleet should involve far more than simply handing over the keys.
Drivers should receive practical familiarisation covering:
- The ADAS technologies fitted to the vehicle.
- What each system is designed to do.
- When the systems are likely to intervene.
- Circumstances where performance may be limited.
- How warnings are presented.
- What drivers should do when alerts occur.
Even a relatively short handover can improve driver confidence, reduce frustration and encourage drivers to use the technology as intended.
Every Manufacturer Does It Differently
One challenge often overlooked is the variety of ADAS systems fitted across the vehicle market.
Although manufacturers offer broadly similar technologies, they often operate in very different ways.
Warning sounds differ.
Displays look different.
Steering intervention varies.
System sensitivity changes between manufacturers.
Even the terminology used to describe similar functions is not always consistent.
For organisations operating mixed fleets, or where drivers regularly move between different makes and models, assuming every vehicle behaves in the same way can lead to confusion.
Whenever drivers change vehicles, even temporarily, a short familiarisation session can help build confidence and reduce unnecessary frustration.
Understanding Why Drivers Switch Systems Off
Fleet managers are often told that drivers disable ADAS because they dislike the technology.
The reality is usually more complex.
Many drivers report frustration with frequent audible warnings or interventions they were not expecting. Lane Keeping Assist, for example, may gently steer the vehicle back towards the lane markings if the system believes the vehicle is drifting unintentionally. Drivers who are unfamiliar with how the system operates, or who make sudden manoeuvres without signalling, can find these interventions unnerving.
Rather than simply instructing drivers not to switch systems off, fleet managers should seek to understand why they are doing so.
Driver feedback can identify where additional familiarisation is required, highlight recurring concerns and, where manufacturer settings allow, help ensure systems are configured appropriately without compromising safety.
ADAS Should Form Part of Fleet Policy
As driver assistance technology continues to evolve, ADAS should become part of wider fleet management policy rather than simply being viewed as another vehicle specification.
Policies should consider:
- Driver familiarisation requirements.
- Procedures for reporting system faults.
- Guidance on when systems may be adjusted or disabled.
- Driver responsibilities when using ADAS-equipped vehicles.
- Refresher training following vehicle changes.
- Recording driver feedback.
Embedding ADAS within driver management policies helps create consistency across the fleet while encouraging greater understanding of the technology.
Preparing for the Next Generation of Fleet Safety
Vehicle technology continues to develop at an extraordinary pace.
Future fleet vehicles will feature increasingly sophisticated systems capable of monitoring driver behaviour, identifying hazards earlier and providing greater levels of intervention.
However, regardless of how advanced these technologies become, the driver’s role remains unchanged.
Safe driving still depends on concentration, sound judgement, observation and hazard perception.
Technology can provide another layer of protection, but it cannot replace professional driving standards.
The Fleet Manager’s Opportunity
For fleet managers, the opportunity goes beyond ordering better-equipped vehicles. The greatest benefits come from combining modern technology with driver familiarisation, clear policies and ongoing engagement.
The safest fleets will not simply have the most technology, but drivers who understand how to use it confidently and effectively.
