South Ayrshire switches to LIVE vehicle camera system for better protection

A spate of faulty vehicle cameras and unrecorded footage on waste and recycling vehicles at South Ayrshire Council has led the council to switch to live camera systems that are remotely monitored and health-checked.

The authority has been fitting camera systems to its waste and recycling fleet since 2015. However, a spate of faulty camera incidents, which resulted in unrecorded footage has led the council to switch suppliers and install LIVE camera technology to its fleet. 18 waste management vehicles and 9 accessible buses are now equipped with the RXLite LIVE camera systems from Innovative Safety Systems Ltd (ISS).

Ronnie Hannah, Fleet Officer, South Ayrshire Council: “We used to record footage onto a hard drive with our previous supplier. However, the hard-drive had to be removed, downloaded and reviewed, which was time-consuming. Also, we experienced a number of situations where footage from particular incidents had not been recorded due to undiagnosed faults with a camera. For this reason we investigated options for a more reliable, fit for purpose solution.”

The ISS managed service includes remote monitoring, management and preventative maintenance of camera systems and in-vehicle technology, including daily equipment health-checks, automatic fault management and pro-active warranty call-out response from the ISS support team.

Ronnie explains why: “The RXLite system works very well. Not only is the footage very clear, ISS also monitors the system remotely on our behalf. They carry out regular health checks to make sure all the cameras are working correctly and that the whole system is working to its full potential. If there are any issues, they fix it automatically. This saves us time and we know we won’t be left in a situation where we don’t have the footage we need. We are delighted with the system and the service from the ISS team. They are quick to respond and great to work with.”

The council has also installed the Cyclear safety warning device from ISS to its fleet to protect cyclists and vulnerable road users.

Keith Boyfield, Sales Manager (Scotland and the North East), ISS said: “We are delighted to be the supplier of choice for South Ayrshire Council and it has been a pleasure working with Ronnie and his team over the last 6 years to enhance the safety of their fleet.”

Four new buses and six new refuse vehicles, all equipped with RXLite and Cyclear are due to arrive at South Ayrshire Council later this month.

ISS provides market leading vehicle safety technology for fleet operators across a diverse range of industries such as waste management, construction, emergency services, haulage and passenger transport. The company, which is backed by Leeds-based YFM Equity Partners, is responsible for pioneering products such as *Cyclear, Reaclear, IDClear and recently launched its new fleet management software solution –  FleetClear.
