Volvo Trucks fuels success at Wordsworth Excavations with new FH rear-steer tanker

Barnsley-based Wordsworth Excavations has taken delivery of a Volvo FH 500 8×4 rear-steer tag tridem fuel tanker, extending its long-standing partnership with the manufacturer.

Joining a Volvo-exclusive 60-strong commercial vehicle fleet, the new high-spec rigid directly replaces a similar smaller vehicle. It will be used as a mobile fuelling station for Wordsworth Excavation’s plant and trucks, working nationwide.

Craig Lofthouse, Plant Manager, Wordsworth Excavations, says: “We’re thrilled to welcome our new Volvo FH rigid into our operations. This time, we needed something a little bigger so opted to jump up to an 8×4. The spec onboard, from the rear-steer capability to the high-torque engine, means it is prepared for whatever job we throw at it.

“Every day our work presents unique challenges, so it is critical to have a fleet that can handle the demands of our business safely and effectively. That’s why Volvo is our go-to vehicle supplier. The track record of our existing Volvos has been excellent, as has been the service at our local dealer. We see little reason to look elsewhere.”

Supplied by Reece Middleton, Area Sales Manager at Crossroads Truck and Bus, the new Volvo FH rigid – featuring a Tasca Tankers body and pumping equipment – is powered by a Euro-6 complaint D13K Step E engine, producing 500 hp and a peak torque of 2,500 Nm.

This is driven by Volvo’s automated 12-speed I-Shift transmission, which constantly evaluates information about speed, weight, road grade and torque demand to enable perfectly timed gearshifts.

In the name of driver comfort, Wordsworth Excavations has opted for Volvo’s top-of-the-line Drive++ package. This adds fully electronic air conditioning with carbon filter and sun, mist and air quality sensors, dual armrests, leather upholstery and an adjustable steering with neck tilt.

Volvo’s Media package with navigation brings DAB radio and a dynamic 12-inch high-resolution instrument cluster with an accompanying secondary colour information display to the spec, completing a comfortable and premium quality driving environment.

Forward Collision Warning with advanced emergency braking and Lane Departure Warning systems work to maximise safety, while visibility is increased thanks to Volvo’s distinctive V-shaped LED headlights.

The truck – expected to cover up to 70,000 km annually – has been supplied on a comprehensive Volvo Gold Contract including preventive maintenance and repairs to guarantee Wordsworth Excavations’ complete peace of mind.

Established in 2003, Wordsworth Excavations undertakes a range of work, including bulk earthworks, ground stabilisation and demolition services. The rigid is expected to remain in the customer’s fleet for at least five years.
