UK Power Networks charging ahead with its Green Recovery programme

UK Power Networks’ new Green Recovery programme will see a total of 76 Electric Vehicle (EV) rapid charging stations installed across the region, as well as enabling heat pumps, low carbon public transport and community energy schemes. It is funding schemes that can be delivered this year or next, to deliver an immediate impact.

The successful projects were chosen because they all demonstrated how they meet both the Government’s Net Zero objective and the Ten Point Plan. They were also assessed to understand their contribution towards improving air quality, creating jobs and alleviating fuel poverty.

The projects range from EV hubs at key motorway service stations such as Toddington, London Gateway and South Mimms, to electrifying seven bus garages across London.

The investment enables UK Power Networks to increase power capacity in areas identified, significantly reducing the cost of connection. Successful applicants will still need to apply for an electricity connection in order to use this increased capacity.

Sul Alli, director of strategy and customer service at UK Power Networks said: “Electricity networks are on the front line of this exciting green revolution. This investment demonstrates what we can achieve by working together as an industry with the support of Government and our regulator, Ofgem.

The investment in network capacity is going to facilitate a number of low carbon technologies to connect contributing to improved air quality and helping to reduce carbon emissions within our regions, as well as promoting jobs and economic recovery.”
